83 percent of Germans use online messengers | GermanPolicy.com

Almost every 16 to 24 year-old in Germany uses online messenger services. This is the result of a survey commissioned by the Federal Network Agency. The most popular service in Germany is WhatsApp.

Communication services are also widely used in other age groups, in addition to WhatsApp – Facebook Messenger or Instagram are widely used, for example. All three leading servies are part of the Facebook group.

Overall, 83 percent use this and other messenger apps for private communication: 95 percent for sending text and images, 65 percent for audio or voice messages. Almost 50 percent use Internet telephony or video telephony.

The survey of over 2,000 users was conducted at the end of 2019, before the corona epidemic occurred. With 50 percent of users, professional use of the services is less pronounced than private use. Only 19 percent make professional calls using messenger apps.
